The 10 Best Ways to Maintain a Positive Attitude

Everyone goes through times when nothing seems to go right.  Stress can come from work, caring for an aging parent or just everyday life.

A day in which nothing goes right will likely trigger an attitude of negativity for the remainder of the day. In this post, we will offer 10 ideas on how to change a negative attitude to a positive one.

A positive attitude allows you to feel good about yourself and your interactions with others.  Positive attitudes allow you to see the bright side in difficult situations, whereas those who let negativity affect them will allow their worst to show when they face challenges.

  1. Make note of the good things in your life by writing them down in a gratitude journal.Purchase a notebook and begin a journal. Rather than focusing on all the bad things that happen in your life, write about all the good things that happen.
  2. Look up inspiring and positive quotes.Subscribe to websites that can send you daily positive quotes to your e-mail. When you are provided a dose of positivity to kickstart your day, you can help improve your mood and be reminded to take a deep breath and push through a difficult situation. 
  3. Begin a yoga or meditation class.You may have seen a yoga class and have seen how relaxed participants were.  This combination helps you relax your mind and body while relieving stress and anxiety.
  4. Take time to relax each day. Make it a point to take at least 30 minutes to relax and unwind. Staying positive can be achieved by taking time to relax.
  5. Surround yourself with positive people.Negative people tend to attract other negative people, as the saying goes. With the right people around you, your outlook and attitude will change and your environment will reflect your own. Negative attitudes will melt away when you have friends, coworkers, etc., who promote your best self and encourage you.
  6. Do something nice for someone.Going above and beyond for someone can help reshape a day. As simple as holding the door for someone walking into work, a store or your home can be reflected in your actions. One way to be nice to someone would be to ‘Pay It Forward’ by buying their morning coffee at their local coffee shop.
  7. Exercise for at least 30 minutes.Get 30 minutes of exercise by walking, running or going to the gym. While focusing on your health, take time to refresh yourself and re-energize your mind and body. 
  8. Get plenty of rest.Have you ever stayed up very late only to get 5 hours of sleep, leaving you feeling irritable the next day?  To function at their best, most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night. If you get adequate sleep, you will be less likely to develop a negative attitude.
  9. Practice dealing with rejection.Rejection happens to everyone all the time, and if you are not used to it, it can be a very difficult thing to deal with.  You should keep a positive attitude when life throws you curveballs if you don’t handle rejection well.
  10. Make someone else smile.Smiles are contagious and something as simple as a compliment to someone can have a positive effect on others as well. If someone else is having a hard time, giving them a nice compliment may help them change their attitude
